Annual Reflection Time!
Bingo. Yahtzee. Whammy? No.
Uh, wow. 2008 has come and it has gone. Like THAT! SHIZZAM!
CRAZY formatting aside, you have to appreciate what exactly has happened for all of us. Not a year ago we were all in High School, in the middle of our senior year. Senioritis was just starting to kick in for those of us in Student Council, because we had just accomplished a kick-ass semester of events, including Homecoming, Spirit Week, Smiles of Christmas, the Overnight and the Brophy Game, to name a select few. Throw in the play and one or two legit finals and SHIT son.
And then we were right back in it, except not willing in the slightest. You may remember having a research paper to do in Dr. Rockwell's class, if you had AP English. Somehow the Senior Class managed to not figure out what to do with our class shirts until the last possible minute. The acting class and I went to various schools to perform our story book. And we all lost a close friend of ours.
And then like that, we were out, after a rainy graduation ceremony and a miraculously frigid night at Kiwanis Wavepool.
Summer was long, and yet short. Life was pretty much the same, although we all seemed to have that creeping feeling of a massive change waiting just over the horizon. A lot of us hung out, but many of our friends went their separate ways. I hosted a final goodbye party at my house, and much Rockband was played. Even then, the taste of high school was still fresh, even if we were ready for a change.
College.
Call it what you will, a massive upheaval, a change for the better, a brave and unknown new horizon. Philosophical crap aside, I in particular felt ready. I moved into my dorm, and while a lot of my old friends were nearby, they were still miles away. During the course of the summer, I changed from a Film Major to an Engineering Major, and my workload reflected my choice. Not very often did I have true reflective time to myself during this first semester. It seemed like I was always working or hanging out with both new friends and old. With so many people it's hard to keep everyone you'd like to in your life. A new president was elected, and at the same time I managed to do great grade-wise.
And now we're back together again for one month before returning to our new lives, perhaps for the second to last time.
A lot has changed in the course of one year, to be sure. I have changed, and a lot of my friends have as well, for better or worse. Truly this year was a massive improvement over the one before it, and I hope that this next one will be even better. Things will be tough for all of us, and I know I in particular have my own struggles. But we've done it before, and by God we'll do it again.
And with that, I make these resolutions:
1. To become more confident and relaxed in social situations (which basically boils down to); Stop overthinking and enjoy myself.
2. Hit up the social scene more (parties yo!). If I am somehow limited in hanging out with High School friends, do my best to hang with my floor or other acquaintances.
3. Make it on the Comedy Troupe.
4. Solidify plans to get an apartment next year (dream team!)
5. Produce one film for every month of break time that I have.
6. Academically own.
7. Once and for all stop reflecting on those moments of my past that I am not happy about and cannot change.
